What managed hosting costs, and what drives it
Managed hosting is quoted per workload rather than as a plan you pick from a grid, because the management is the product and the management effort does not track the size of the server. A single well-behaved application on one VPS and a three-tier system with a replicated database and a staging environment need different amounts of attention at the same CPU count.
The cost drivers
Compute and memory, storage type and volume, whether you need a replica for availability or only a backup, how many environments you want kept alive, the backup retention you actually need against the one that sounds reassuring, and whether cover is business hours or round the clock. Where the workload should sit matters too: local placement for latency and data residency, or an international region where the application is served globally. You get one monthly figure covering infrastructure and management together, and it holds for the term.
Where a whole machine is cheaper
Past a certain size, renting virtual capacity month after month costs more than a dedicated box doing the same job, and the crossover comes sooner than most people expect for storage-heavy and memory-heavy workloads. When managed hosting is the wrong purchase
Four cases where we would tell you to spend the money elsewhere.
- A static site or a brochure page. Put it on a CDN or a static host for a fraction of the price. Paying for a managed server to serve HTML is a waste, and we do not want that engagement.
- You have a capable platform engineer already. If someone in-house genuinely owns the infrastructure, you are paying us to duplicate them. Take a review and an on-call backstop instead of full management.
- The application is the problem. Hosting cannot fix a system that falls over because of how it is written. Moving a slow application to a bigger server buys you a few months and a larger bill. Fix the application, then host it properly.
- You want shared web hosting or a domain. We do not sell either, and a shared host will serve you better and cheaper for that. Said plainly so nobody wastes a call.
What you keep
Root or SSH access throughout, so it is never a black box you cannot inspect. The server build documentation, the monitoring and alerting configuration, the backup schedule with restore instructions, and your data exportable at any time without asking. Where infrastructure was provisioned in code, the repository is yours. If you leave, you take a documented, running system rather than a support ticket asking for your own files.
